Believe it or not, even a town the size of Bear Valley has good culinary opportunities. Here are some reviews of local spots.
Food and Drink:
- Headwaters Coffee House—Proprietors Jackie & Jeff Gouveia: Head Chef Chip Roberts: 753-2078. Located in the Bear Valley Lodge Commercial Center. Open 7am - 3:00pm or thereabouts. Best possible solution to breakfast and lunch needs. Great coffee drinks (best latte I've ever had, anywhere!), great breakfast, great sandwiches. Great smoothies, yo!. If there are people in town, get there EARLY as this place gets a fierce line going and it takes them a while to process the queue. They also have three WiFi'd PC's.753-2078. UPDATE: Headwaters has started serving dinner on Saturday nights. Reservations strongly recommended. Note: Will probably be closed between middle of October until Thanksgiving (tentative).
- Upper Crust Pizza— GONE.... once again... out of business. Was told that it will reopen under new management on Thanksgiving. This is not surprising, as while the proprietors were super nice, the execution of the business was, shall we say, not up to modern expectations. It's this thing called service... people expect to have their order taken promptly and food served within 30-45 minutes. This thing called service is not seen often enough in Bear Valley.
- General Store/Deli—Proprietors Beth & Dave Johnston: 753-2842. Given the same ingredients, Deb's sandwich will always taste better than mine. It's the Love! They now have pre-made sandwiches for those on the go; tater & mac salad; donuts Thursday-Monday; chips and other sundry munchies up the whazoo. Did I mention beer?
- Bear Valley Lodge—GM Mark Phillips: F&B Robbie Christy; Executive Chef Mickael Blanco. The Grizzly Bar & Grill is the only place you can get food 7 nights a week: 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. With the Smokin' Hot Pasta Bowl and the Tempura Tower, its not just chicken strips and burgers anymore. The Creekside Dining Room is open 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm Thursday through Sunday during the offseason, but will be open 7 days a week during the coming ski season. (Rah!) Call 753-2327 for Creekside DR reservations only.
-
Lake Alpine Lodge—Located on Lake Alpine 753-6358. Decent dinners ranging from burgers at $10 to steaks at $25-30. Try the bbq ribs for $15, it's a pleaser. Service was prompt and friendly, food came within a reasonable time. Finally, some service in Bear Valley! Closes at 9pm on weekdays.
- Warming Hut Cafe—Proprietors Diane & Paul Peterson. Located in the Bear Valley Cross Country ski area (753-2834). This is why you get a trail pass in the first place—to get to the Warming Hut! Weekday hours are flexible. Do the marmot thing on the deck with a brew and a burger straight off the BBQ. Just tell your friends you put in 15K and call it good.

2007-09-21 16:18:08 sorry to hear about Basecamp... I always liked the menu... I hope they relocate elsewhere... just where would be a good question. If Lake Alpine stays open, that would be a fun snowmobile ride in for dinner.... —TonyZuccarino
2007-11-20 00:25:42 Closing the Red Dog was just Wrong. They say it was not feasable to have staff living in a pub. As an employee who lived in the Red Dog in 1967, I take offence at the notion that what I did, was not feasable. What may seem unfeasable to the Management, seems evil to me. It is just wrong, and I think I know right from wrong. Phil —PhilipDavis

2007-11-25 08:01:38 I went off to Lake Alpine Lodge for dinner to check it out, and it was pretty good. The service was friendly and frequent, the food was more than decent, though the menu a bit pricey for what you get. The atmosphere is real nice with a huge fireplace. This place should substitute nicely for Base Camp. And the staff did confirm they will be open all winter. Call ahead for transportation - they'll meet you at the 'end of the road' and provide a parking pass and a SnoCat ride to the restaurant and back. Others more adventorous may choose to ride their snowmobile from town to Lake Alpine instead... can you imagine the trail from LA to BV packed with sleds at midnight? —TonyZuccarino
2007-11-25 08:06:42 btw, I went off to an anonymous BV establishment last nite first, in a lazy attempt to avoid driving up to LAL, and left after 5 minutes of waiting to catch someones attention. Word of advice from a customer to restaurants: if you're single handed, we understand - just tell us we'll be with you in a few minutes. As opposed to ignoring the line at the counter until you're good and ready. As we walked out, others were heard saying in not happy tones "yeah, this happens all the time here". Just my feedback if you want BV to come off as a place for visitors to have a good time and come back to. I'm used to it, others aren't. —TonyZuccarino
2007-11-26 08:05:50 Lake Alpine is doing a great job. They are open 4 days a week for food, and I think the bar is open 7 days a week. It is so nice to see owner/managenment that is on track to making your experence a good one. I have had dinner there, a half dozen times, and plan to go up there often this winter. The owners are putting a lot of energy into making the place their own, and seem to have customer satisfaction, as a priority. Very refreshing. Cheers, Phil —PhilipDavis
2007-12-23 14:59:16 Lake Alpine has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run on the first pitch. There is no doubt that it is the place that locals will now call home. The Warming Hut has been to the plate, but has struck out, since no one is willing to try out their extended hours. they were trying to stay open until 7PM, but without any customers, that will end shortly. The snowmobile trail is now packed up to Lake Alpine, so as long as you get on your snowmobile, why not go to the best place in town! And it's a full moon! Cheers —PhilipDavis
2007-12-24 09:12:44 is the Warming Hut accessible by xcountry ski, or can you snowmobile there? —TonyZuccarino
2007-12-24 10:19:14 Only on XC skis or snowshoes. It's near the runway strip —SteveTroyer
2007-12-26 17:49:09 talked with the NZ'er who runs Headwaters and she said they will be open this whole week, 5-9pm I think it was. —TonyZuccarino
2007-12-26 17:54:41 5 am? to 9 pm? they open at 7 am and stay open all day until 9. HOW they do it, I dunno, with all new people to train and keep it staffed after a major lull. Tip them big. Be patient, and love that they are there for US !!!! —SusiLewis
2007-12-26 20:18:40 Susi, sorry, brain was cold... I meant 5pm-9pm for dinner. Yes, I agree, thank goodness for Headwaters... as long as they have enough staff that is. —TonyZuccarino
